Director's note
Spring has sprung! I'm admiring the daffodils in my neighborhood as I write this. You must admire them, they are the early birds of spring flowers. Just a little warmth and sunlight, and they are jumping out of the ground. They have so much energy and excitement.
|
|
I'd like to think we are all energy and excitement too. But the reality is the world is very uncertain right now.
|
|
|
|
The pandemic is not over, but maybe it is more manageable. The conflict in Ukraine is causing distress for many. Acknowledging that the world is having an effect on us is important, but it is also important to find ways to feel energy and excitement just like the flowers who are happy to see spring.
|
|
With that said, I'm excited about the work our team is doing. There are a number of library faculty presenting at conferences this spring on their own research. We have opportunities to attend numerous professional development sessions as well with our University Libraries colleagues. It is time to start to discussing the next academic year and what workshops we should offer and what services we could add or expound on.
|
|
|
|
Spring is here for the flowers (and birds and chipmunks). I think spring is here for the Harrell Library as well. Time to enjoy some warmth and sunlight and get excited about our library and how can we grow and bloom too.

Good news! The Penn State community continues to have access to Pure, SciVal, Funding Institutional and Scopus.
|
|
|
|
|
|

Harrell Health Sciences Library hosts its own publicly accessible educational video channel through a Penn State platform called Kaltura.
|

Wendy and Ronald Gilbert treasure a tangible reminder of their son, Dylan, who passed away last year – a 3D representation of his heartbeat – created as a legacy gift.

Library Group Study Room Capacity Changes
|
|
|
In addition to the January updates to the Group Study Room policy, the minimum capacity of four group study rooms in the library has been changed.
|
|
Learners (defined in the policy as graduate students, medical students, nursing students, physician assistant students, visiting scholars and residents) can now reserve rooms 1618P, Q, S, and T (see our interactive floor map to find this cluster of rooms) as an individual or with a group. All other restrictions outlined in the policy still apply to these reservations. The minimum capacity of other study rooms is still two people; these rooms are intended for group use only.

Did You Know: The Harrell Library Keeps Yearbooks!
|
|
|
The Harrell Health Sciences Library archives is home to the Penn State College of Medicine yearbooks all the way back to 1984.
|
|
In fact, 1984 was the first official yearbook of the College of Medicine.
|
|
|
|
|
These yearbooks contain nostalgic images such as Dr. Ian Zagon when he was first teaching in Anatomy and Dr. Dwight Davis when he was new to the Department of Medicine. According to the photos in the 1997 yearbook, the library was the best place to sleep. Students who are currently on the yearbook staff are more than welcome to look at the old yearbooks for ideas and inspiration. Just a reminder, the yearbooks must be used in the Library, and please, no drawing mustaches on Librarians.

Open Access (OA) Publishing Now Available for all PLOS Journals
|
|
|
|
Penn State’s agreement (in partnership with the Big Ten Academic Alliance libraries) for Open Access (OA) publishing has expanded to cover all Public Library of Science (PLOS) titles. For additional OA publishing opportunities with fee waivers or discounts for Penn State authors, please go to this website and scroll to the section on “APC Discounts for PSU Authors”.
