Harrell Health Sciences Library Newsletter - July 2019

Director's note

Hello! My name is Kelly Thormodson, and I’m the Associate Dean and Director of Harrell Health Sciences Library: Research and Learning Commons.

I’ve been in this position now since April 1. I’m excited to be part of Penn State.
ThormodsonKelly
A little about me: I am from Minnesota originally and I must say the rolling hills and trees and corn fields surrounding the College of Medicine here really remind me of home. I have a BA from North Dakota State University and an MA from the University of Iowa. I’ve been in the health sciences library field my entire career, including positions in Seattle, Iowa City, Grand Forks and now here in Hershey.

Obviously, being new means I’m still learning the lay of the land, but there are consistencies from institution to institution and those are in full swing here at the College of Medicine. The new class of medical students arrives this month; the physician assistant students started a new class in May; and all the new residents started July 1 across the country. All those students are going to keep us busy this summer. No slowing down at a medical library; there are always new students to help.

Meanwhile, as I get to know people and we move forward with the new classes, the Harrell team and I will be sitting down this summer to write our new strategic plan. What does the future of a health sciences library look like? What is the next service area that the library can partner on? We will continue initiatives in education, technology, research support, and, new this year and in accordance with the College of Medicine's mission, we will look to do outreach with the Hershey community.

Please visit us at the library! We’re always happy to see you.
