Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network team up on bike camp for children with disabilities

July 30 - August 3

Three adults jogging along side and a young child independently riding a bike

Penn State Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network are hosting the third annual “I Can Shine” Bike Camp for children with physical and intellectual disabilities on Monday, July 30 – Friday, Aug. 3 at Spooky Nook Sports, 2313 Spooky Nook Dr. Manheim, PA 17545.

This week-long camp helps teach children with various medical needs how to ride a conventional two-wheel bike.

Volunteers are needed to walk alongside riders and offer encouragement and support. Register online.

Children ages eight and older, as well as teens and adults who have a disability and are able to side-step and walk without assistive devices are eligible to register. The camp serves a maximum of 40 riders.

The program uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride. Over the course of the week, instructors continually adjust the bikes' stability in an effort to challenge riders' balance as they become more skillful. Learn more by watching this video.
