Webinar: Inclusion Academy – Caring for Patients with Mental Health Disorders
November 19, 2020, 7:00 am to 8:00 am
Inclusion Academy, established by the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is an educational program focused on providing students, faculty/staff and health care providers at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine with cultural knowledge and understanding of various diverse/marginalized communities with the intention to foster diversity and inclusion in all facets of the organization.
Patients with mental health disorders often present unique challenges for health care providers. Communication can be a struggle for many people with a mental health disorder as some patients don’t have the motivation to communicate, while others lack the confidence to say what they really want to. Some patients experience hallucinations, which can affect how and when they communicate. In addition, these individuals may avoid seeking treatment for their physical problems in a primary care setting. They may have fewer health care options or they may suffer from the stigma associated with a diagnosis of mental illness. Many patients with mental disorders seek treatment for physical illness only when there are no other options.
The purpose of this session is to equip providers with guidelines to assist in the identification and care of patients with co-occurring mental and physical health disorders in the primary care setting. This session will aim to explore various strategies to identify potential mental health issues, improve communication, identify safety concerns and improve outcomes for this vulnerable patient population.
The session will be held via Zoom. Webinar links will be provided in advance of the event for those who register.
