Webinar: Inclusion Academy – Strategies for Overcoming Language Barriers in Health Care

October 1, 7:00 am to 8:00 am

Inclusion Academy, established by the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is an educational program focused on providing students, faculty/staff and health care providers at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine with cultural knowledge and understanding of various diverse/marginalized communities with the intention to foster diversity and inclusion in all facets of the organization.

Miscommunication in the health care sector can be life-threatening. The rising number of immigrant patients and foreign-trained staff means that communication errors between a health care practitioner and patient when one or both are speaking a second language are increasingly likely. Understanding the role that language plays in creating barriers to health care is critical for health care systems that are experiencing an increasing range of culturally and linguistically diverse populations both among patients and practitioners.

This session will aim to explore various strategies for overcoming language barriers to ensure the highest levels of care are still being provided.

The session will be held via Zoom. Webinar links will be provided in advance of the event for those who register.
