June 7

The Penn State Health 22-Day Inclusion Challenge
WEEK 2 – Theme: Understanding Differences

June 7: Understanding Differences: Disability Inclusion

Disability is an aspect of diversity. According to the World Health Organization, globally, there are over a billion people, or approximately 15% of the world, who are living with some form of a disability, and with aging and chronic health conditions, that number is increasing. There are a broad range of disabilities. According to a June 9, 2011, NPR story, the most common disability for those under 60 is depression, followed by hearing and visual challenges.

  • Learn about hearing challenges from a Canadian documentary series titled“You Can’t Ask That,” on AMI here. Its running time is about 22 minutes. Other disabilities are included in the series that you also might want to explore.
  • And for a conversation with kids about disabilities, watch a short film called The Present hereThis has a running time of about 4 minutes.
