Topics in Addiction: The Impact of Substance Misuse on Public Health and Communities”
March 10 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
At the next “Topics in Addiction” seminar, Jeff Hanley, executive director of the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance, will present “The Impact of Substance Misuse on Public Health and Communities.”
The talk will focus on current drug policy trends in Pennsylvania. While talks of legalizing recreational marijuana are happening in Pennsylvania, Hanley will discuss the community and public health impacts of marijuana legalization in Colorado. Expanding the number of outlets that sell alcohol is also being debated and Hanley will speak on how that might that affect communities. Hanley notes that while tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and gambling continue to grow, drug and alcohol prevention specialists are available to help Pennsylvanians navigate these efforts.
In addition to the in-person presentation at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., the event will be streamed live and recorded via Zoom.
Light refreshments will be served.
Topics in Addiction is the monthly gathering of the Addiction Center for Translation to discuss topics related to addiction. Topics are presented in an informal environment in ways that are accessible to the faculty, staff and students of Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State as a whole, of any background. The program hopes to reach not only basic scientists and clinicians, but also everyone who has an interest in addiction and its widespread implications on research, clinical work, medical education, policy and the community.
The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. in Room C3860 at Penn State College of Medicine, with all meetings available via Zoom.
Sessions will vary in focus and format depending on the speaker.
