Webinar: Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Seminar – ‘Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Human Microbiome Sciences’
October 12, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Presented by: Seth Bordenstein, PhD, Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Endowed Chair in Microbiome Sciences, Professor of Biology and Entomology, Director of the Microbiome Center, Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, Penn State
About the presentation: Human microbiome variation associates with many of the same diseases that present as health disparities across different sociodemographic backgrounds in the United States. However, most studies lack good representation across the diversity of all of us. As the ability to modulate microbiomes through personalized therapies gains relevance, there is a new imperative to carefully understand and possibly modulate microbiomes for mediating health disparities. Two crucial first steps are to (i) catalog what types of multiomic and longitudinal variation reproducibly occur across the diversity of us and (ii) disentangle the complex, social factors that shape system biology features in carefully controlled studies. Here I will discuss our efforts to emphasize the value of diversity and inclusion in the human microbiome sciences as we advance health equity and knowledge on the rules of human microbiome variation.
