Webinar: Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Seminar – ‘Evaluating the Effects of Vaccination and Prior Infection on SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Severe Outcomes Over Time’

November 17, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Presented by: Danyu Lin, PhD, Dennis Gillings Distinguished Professor of Biostatistics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

About the presentation: Vaccination is a major tool to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, but its effectiveness wanes over time and tends to be lower against new variants. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 virus induces immunity against future infection, but its protection also wanes over time. The knowledge about the waning effects of vaccination and prior infection and their potential interactions may guide prevention strategies. In this talk, I will describe a general statistical framework for evaluating the time-varying effects of vaccination and prior infection on SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe Covid-19 outcomes and present data from the pivotal phase 3 trial of the Moderna vaccine and from the North Carolina Covid-19 vaccination and case surveillance systems, highlighting the results on the omicron variant we recently published in New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association.
