Webinar: Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Seminar – ‘Introducing a Consulting Gerontologic Biostatistician’

September 14, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Presented by: Dr. Terrence E. Murphy, PhD, Professor of Biostatistics, Department of Public Health Sciences, Penn State College of Medicine

About the presentation: There are a few objectives to this presentation. First, as a new faculty member, I introduce myself with a short history of my career and a summary of the last 17 years which were spent practicing a discipline referred to as gerontologic biostatistics. In this capacity I have served as a consultant to aging researchers funded through grants from the NIH and foundations. Several examples of this work will be showcased that include the following: a spatial analysis of a quasi-experimental design that evaluated a fall-prevention intervention; joint modeling of monthly count of functional disability and death over 10+ years; sensitivity analyses to the competing risk of death in longitudinal analyses of geriatric outcomes; and risk prediction modeling that draws on both statistical models and machine learning. It is hoped that this story may be helpful as an example of the myriad professional paths available to grad students who may be wondering where their own careers may take them. Lastly, will mention a symposium on November 4 at the national meeting of the Gerontological Society of America titled “Gerontologic Biostatistics: Merging with Data Science and Toward Personalized Medicine” that consists of four talks that show where this field is headed.
