Webinar: Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security Public Health Preparedness Option – ‘Responding to Disease Outbreaks’

November 3, 2021, 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Presented by: Shelley Haffner, MPS, BS.

About the presenter: Shelley Haffner graduated from Penn State with a BS in Nursing and MPS Homeland Security: Public Health Preparedness.  Most of her career was spent working in outpatient health care settings. She retired from University Health Services, Penn State University Park in 2020 with the last 13 to 14 years as the infectious disease manager with the added responsibilities of staff education and liaising with commonwealth campus health centers.  During her time in the Public Health Preparedness program, she researched and developed tools and training exercises for Penn State campuses.  During the fall 2020 semester, she worked at the Penn State Altoona campus on COVID-19 response, including case management and contact tracing.

About the presentation: Responding to disease outbreaks is challenging.  Advanced planning can facilitate faster response and mitigate disease spread.  We need to learn from previous and current outbreaks and act on lessons learned from successes and failures when preparing for future outbreaks.  We could have done better responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and will need to do better with the next epidemic.
