Student Affairs spreads joy at College of Medicine to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, promote wellness

Penn State College of Medicine faculty and students were surprised with sweet treats and special snacks as part of Random Acts of Kindness Day on Monday, Feb. 17.

The Office of Student Affairs planned the event with a helping hand from Karen Kim, MD, MS, College dean, who joined in by giving first-year medical students a surprise study break and treating everyone to a quick coffee run.

Student Affairs organizes similar events throughout the academic year, offering students a variety of fun ways to take breaks from their schedules. With burnout rates high across the country – about half of U.S. medical students report experiencing burnout, according to the American Medical Association – the office is committed to promoting wellness and providing other programs and resources to enhance student experience and development.

The College’s Office for Professional Mental Health also provides resources for both students and faculty as well as residents, fellows and physicians.
