Thiru M. Annaswamy, MD, MA, FAAPMR, currently serves as a tenured professor and Rocco Ortenzio Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation after joining Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine in September of 2022. In addition, Annaswamy oversees the 76-bed Penn State Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a joint venture with Select Medical.

Previously, Annaswamy served as professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He also served as a staff physician and section chief in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the VA North Texas Health Care System/Dallas VA Medical Center.

Annaswamy received his medical training at Mysore Medical College, Mysore, India, and completed his postgraduate residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Annaswamy has served in the roles of clinician, educator and clinician-scientist, treating patients with spine disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and diseases of the muscles and nerves. He is deeply humbled by the recognitions for Outstanding Service and Research/Writing; awards that he has received from the Association of Academic Physiatrists and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. But he is prouder still of the enduring impact he has left on the more than 75 students, trainees and faculty he has mentored over the last 24 years.

Annaswamy is on the board of governors of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and has previously served on the governing boards of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the Foundation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
