Penn State Health explores options for relocating Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute

Penn State Health took full governance control of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (PPI) during 2023 following UPMC’s departure from the 50-50 joint venture. Our dedication to operating PPI reflects our ongoing commitment to providing full access to much needed, high-quality behavioral health services in central Pennsylvania.

Because PPI’s lease expires on May 31, 2026, and we are facing challenges to renew that lease, it’s likely that PPI will need to relocate in 2026.

Our goals throughout this process are to ensure that these vital services remain available and accessible to patients across the region; to protect patients’ continuity of care with the same providers; and to make the transition as seamless as possible for patients and their families, clinicians, staff, educators, students and researchers.

Given the length of time necessary to build or renovate appropriate space to house these critical services, Penn State Health leaders are now in the process of exploring alternative options, which include:

  • Building out dedicated space within Holy Spirit Medical Center for inpatient services and relocating outpatient services to a site to be determined
  • Building a new facility with a joint venture partner at a site that would need to be determined

Penn State Health leaders will decide within the next few months.

Updates will be provided as plans move forward.
