School staffers ‘resuscitate’ school mascot with Hands-Only CPR

Lower Dauphin High School's mascot, the Falcon, dropped to the floor and played the role of a cardiac arrest patient on Monday. It was all part of a skit in which the falcon was ‘resuscitated' by teachers and school staff as a certified instructor from Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute led them through Hands-Only CPR. The procedure, which does not require rescue breaths used with traditional CPR, is touted by the American Heart Association as a way to more than double a person's chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest. Students, teachers and school staff looked on as Tammi Bortner, B.S.N., R.N., of Penn State Hershey talked school nurse Mary Smith and others through Hands-Only CPR.
