Former Pfizer executive and Penn State alum joins Medical Center board

Former pharmaceutical company executive, Penn State alum, and philanthropist Peter G. Tombros has joined the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Board of Directors. Tombros replaces long-time board member James Broadhurst, who announced he was stepping down from the board earlier this year. Tombros attended his first Medical Center board meeting today.

Tombros's professional career includes eight years as president and CEO of Enzon Pharma, where under his leadership, the company grew from a market capitalization of $44 million to over $3 billion. Previously, Tombros spent 25 years at Pfizer Inc. in a variety of positions including vice president of marketing, senior vice president and general manager, and executive vice president, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

Tombros also has private company experience, serving as CEO and director of VivoQuest from 2002 to 2005.

Tombros was a non-executive member of the board of NPS Pharmaceuticals until it was sold on February 20, 2015 to Shire, Inc. He is also on the board of Cambrex, Inc., where he is chairman of the Audit Committee. In addition, he has served as a director of other public companies, including Alpharma, Pharmanet Development Group Inc. and Dendrite International.

Tombros is currently professor and Distinguished Executive in Residence in the Eberly College of Science BS/MBA Program at Penn State. Financial Times, one of the world’s leading business news organizations, recently selected Tombros to receive its 2015 Outstanding Director Award.

In 2001, Tombros and his wife, Ann, created the Tombros Foundation to help them pursue their philanthropic interests. They have both been active in supporting a number of educational and cultural institutions. For example, he was chairman of the 7 ½-year Penn State $2.2 Billion For the Future capital campaign. At Penn State Hershey, their philanthropic activities extend to the Four Diamonds Fund, Children’s Miracle Network and the Medical Student Summer Intern Program.

Tombros holds bachelor of arts and master of science degrees from Penn State and earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Graduate School.
