What they all have in common: A lot of heart

Some of the 477 people who have received a new heart at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center over the past three decades gathered recently to celebrate their successes. Nearly 50 transplant recipients attended the annual reunion on May 22.

In 2014, 12 patients received new hearts at the Medical Center, which performed its first heart transplant in 1984.

Penn State Hershey is the only hospital outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia that performs heart transplant surgery. The Medical Center currently provides follow-up care to more than 200 heart transplant recipients.
