Cancer Institute event honors survivors

“Whatever you believe, believe in yourself. Be positive and enjoy your life.”

Celebration, support and inspiration – these words echoed through the Penn State Cancer Institute during the 29th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day. On Friday, June 10, more than 200 staff and patients at the Cancer Institute joined in this nationwide celebration, honoring the more than 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States.

The survivorship celebration began with an open question and answer session with Dr. Raymond Hohl, director of the Cancer Institute. A series of educational seminars followed, including a discussion around treatments and new cancer research, and a celebratory dance featuring a melanoma survivor. Keynote speaker Terese Mascotti, author of Chemolicious: Getting to Your Best Self, inspired the attendees to share their support, celebrate their journey and continue their fight against cancer.

“It was wonderful to meet others and hear their stories – people who have made the same journey as you. It's comforting and helpful to hear how they are dealing with the challenges you are facing,” said attendee Kathleen Ryland.
