Douglas receives Excellence in Medicine Minority Scholars Award
Annyella Douglas, a third-year medical student at Penn State College of Medicine, is a recipient of the 2017 Excellence in Medicine Minority Scholars Award. The award was given as part of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Excellence in Medicine Awards program during the AMA annual meeting in Chicago.
The foundation recognized Douglas's commitment to bringing quality care to underserved populations during her first year of medical school; and her role in reestablishing the Student National Medical Association organization and serving as its co-president, resulting in an increase of minority student attendance to the College of Medicine. As a Global Health Scholar, Douglas spent a summer researching in Ghana and will return in her fourth year to do clinical work. She also created the Inter-Professional Student Organization Health Mentors Program that allows inter-professional students to work in a team to help a community member of an underserved population achieve a health goal.
The AMA Foundation's Excellence in Medicine Awards program recognizes physicians who exemplify the highest values of volunteerism, community engagement, leadership and dedication to the care of underserved populations.
The Minority Scholars Award program not only encourages diversity in medicine and alleviates debt, but also acknowledges the commitment to the elimination of healthcare disparities; outstanding academic achievements; leadership activities; and community involvement.
