Penn State Health appoints Leaming as Hampden Medical Center’s vice president for medical affairs

Penn State Health named Dr. James Leaming vice president for medical affairs at Hampden Medical Center, effective Jan. 1. Leaming transitioned from interim vice president for medical affairs, a role he has held since May 2021.

Leaming is responsible for leading the development and recruitment of the medical staff for Hampden Medical Center where he also oversees the acute care hospital’s relationships with private practice physicians to ensure clinical integration and patient and provider quality and satisfaction.

“Dr. Leaming is a proven leader of our medical staff and was instrumental in the opening of Hampden Medical Center,” says Don McKenna, regional president for Hampden Medical Center and Holy Spirit Medical Center. “He has a keen understanding of what community physicians need from our hospitals to deliver the best care and outcomes for our patients.”

Leaming joined Holy Spirit Hospital in 2016 after serving Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for eight years, including roles as director of emergency medicine research, director of emergency medicine observation and director of emergency medicine research fellowship.

Board-certified in emergency medicine, Leaming graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio. He completed both a residency and a research fellowship in emergency medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y. He is accredited by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
