Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center receives national accreditation for its Comprehensive Weight Management program

Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center has earned Comprehensive Center accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This achievement signifies that the Comprehensive Weight Management program at Lancaster Medical Center meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality.

MBSAQIP is a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery that sets national standards for bariatric surgery centers with the goal of advancing safe and high -quality care for patients. Accredited centers offer multidisciplinary preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity, improving patient outcomes and long-term success.

“Our dedicated care team has worked tirelessly to achieve this accreditation for our Comprehensive Weight Management program,” said Dr. Allison Barrett, director of bariatric surgery at Lancaster Medical Center. “And this accreditation is not just a professional achievement—it’s a promise to our community that we are here to provide high-quality, compassionate care that can profoundly transform lives.”

To earn MBSAQIP Accreditation, Lancaster Medical Center met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. Its Comprehensive Weight Management program also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement.

“The effort and preparation put into our program have been nothing short of exemplary,” said Claire Mooney, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Lancaster Medical Center. “From our talented surgical services team, led by Dr. Barrett and Dr. Parth Sharma, who skillfully perform these life-changing bariatric procedures, to our dedicated nurses, technicians and administrative staff, every member of our team plays a crucial role. Their hard work and determination ensure that we not only meet but exceed the standards of care and service that our patients expect and deserve.”

The Comprehensive Weight Management program at Lancaster Medical Center offers personalized and compassionate care to help patients meet their goals. The team is led by Barrett, an experienced bariatric surgeon who performs safe, minimally invasive bariatric surgical procedures; nutrition and mental health counselors; a plastic surgeon who performs surgical body contouring; an obesity medicine specialist for nonsurgical weight loss; and a dietician.
