Swenson named VP of musculoskeletal services at Penn State Health

Penn State Health has hired Teresa Swenson, an accomplished orthopedic leader with three decades experience in health care, to be its new administrative vice president of musculoskeletal services. She joined the organization Dec. 16.

Swenson will oversee strategic initiatives for the musculoskeletal service line alongside physician leader Dr. April Armstrong, chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State Health. Swenson will collaborate with system hospitals and medical groups to implement these strategies across the health system. She will also ensure that the actions put in place support the teaching and research missions of our Penn State College of Medicine.

“We are very excited to bring someone with Teresa’s experience onto our team,” Armstrong said. “I look forward to the two of us working together and collaborating with the rest of Penn State Health and the College of Medicine to grow our musculoskeletal service line and orthopedics as a whole.”

Swenson brings to Penn State Health 30 years of health care experience, including the last 15 years focused in orthopedics. Prior to joining Penn State Health, Swenson served as associate vice president of the surgical group and practices at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, Pa. While there, she led strategic oversight for its orthopedic service line, as well as general surgery, ENT, obstetrics and gynecology, and other surgical practices.

In 2023, she led Evangelical Community Hospital to an Orthopedic Center of Excellence designation from Det Norske Veritas, a leading worldwide health care certification group. It was the first and only designation of its kind given to a hospital in Pennsylvania.

“I am passionate about musculoskeletal health and strive for excellence in all aspects of musculoskeletal care delivery,” Swenson said. “This position represents the ideal role that is embedded in a prestigious health system known to provide excellent and compassionate patient care, medical innovation, education and research.”

Swenson also served as director of Geisinger’s Musculoskeletal Institute and manager of its Department of Orthopedics in Danville. She started her career in orthopedics at the University of Florida Jacksonville Healthcare center.

Swenson received her American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Fellow Certification in 2024. She earned her MBA from the University of Scranton in 2017 and became a certified clinical research professional in 2011. She holds a bachelor of science in health from the University of North Florida and an associate of science degree in radiography from Florida Community College of Jacksonville.
