McNickle and Byun recognized for Exceptional Moments in Teaching

Lauren McNickle, MD, faculty member, and Woo Yul Byun, MD, resident, were recognized through the “Exceptional Moments in Teaching” program for the month of August.
Dr. McNickle is an assistant professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics.
“Dr. McNickle taught things in a very practical way that allowed for me to feel comfortable learning and asking questions,” said a student. “Her teaching made me feel more confident in my skills and she really goes above and beyond to care for her students. She is amazing!”
Dr. McNickle is a pet-lover, trained pediatric emergency medicine physician, and enthusiastic about the education of medical students and residents. She trained at Penn State and Baystate Medical Centers to receive education in both general pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. McNickle received an excellent education during her residency at Penn State and was able to grow her interests as an educator. She is extremely excited to be back as an attending and to be working with first- and second-year medical students on their foundations of patient care.
The resident awardee, Dr. Byun, is a second-year otolaryngology resident in the Department of Otolaryngology.
“Woo is an amazing resident who from the very first minute of my ENT rotation showed me the ropes on how to be successful,” one student said. “He incorporated me into discussions on treatment plans for patients, making sure I always understood why we did things. He gave me opportunities to demonstrate my knowledge. He is friendly, wise, and overall an awesome person.”
Dr. Byun grew up in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and majored in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He then studied medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He became interested in otolaryngology because it encompasses much of what makes life enjoyable, such as listening to music, conversing with friends and enjoying food. As an otolaryngologist, he hopes to improve his patients’ lives with innovative new therapies and technologies. His hobbies include photography, sporting clays and hiking.
