Children’s Hospital hosts Nittany’s North Pole event for patients

Children spending the holiday season at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital had gifts to open, thanks to Nittany’s North Pole. The annual event coordinated by the hospital’s Child Life team took place on Sunday, Dec. 21, welcoming parents and caregivers to a festive space brimming with gifts and holiday cheer.
The event followed months of planning and preparation. It was staffed by nearly three dozen employees and volunteers, and gave families a chance to select presents for their children. Tables overflowing with cozy pajamas and stocking stuffers greeted guests at the entrance, while volunteer “elves” guided each family through a room divided into themed sections – stuffed animals, blankets, books and more.
Adding to the excitement, parents received raffle tickets for a chance to win larger, one-of-a-kind prizes. Winners were announced at the end of the day, with prizes delivered directly to patient rooms.
Behind the scenes, the event was made possible by an outpouring of generosity. The Child Life Program receives a steady stream of donations during the holiday season – often several per day – from grateful patient families, local businesses and community members. These contributions stocked every shelf and table at Nittany’s North Pole, underscoring the power of collective kindness.
First launched in 2013, Nittany’s North Pole has become a cherished tradition at the Children’s Hospital, pausing only in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. This year’s celebration once again delivered joy and comfort to families navigating hospital stays during the holidays – thanks to the dedication of Child Life staff and the community’s unwavering support.
