DeLone appointed to Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Board

Dr. Bret DeLone, chief medical officer and director of Quality and Patient Safety for Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center, has been appointed to the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Board of Directors as a representative of The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

The nonprofit foundation serves as the accrediting body for Pennsylvania trauma centers, which are hospitals that provide 24-hour specialized medical services and resources to patients with traumatic injuries such as motor vehicle accidents, falls and acts of violence. The foundation supports hospitals in achieving quality outcomes through continuous performance improvement, education and collaboration. It also supports research and best practices that standardize and shape the future of trauma care.

DeLone will join the 20-member board of directors, comprised of professionals with administrative and clinical expertise in trauma and emergency medicine, for a three-year term from Jan. 1, 2026, through Dec. 31, 2028.

Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center became a Level 2 accredited trauma center in 2017. Its trauma center is the busiest of the Level 1 and Level 2 trauma centers in the region, caring for more than 4,000 trauma patients in 2025. Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is the only Level 1 trauma center for both adults and the pediatric population in south central Pennsylvania.

Research shows that appropriate trauma treatment by specially trained staff reduces the likelihood of death and permanent disability. Pennsylvania recognizes four levels of trauma centers, with Levels 1 and 2 providing the most specialized resources. The state currently has 57 accredited trauma centers.
