Sacred Journey: Restoring My Plains Indian Tipi

Native American educator, advocate and storyteller
As an Anthropology student, Carolyn was awarded a grant from Millersville University that enabled her to travel to Cheyenne River to research the Plains Indian tipi and conduct interviews. Her final Anthropology project was a hand-painted tipi crafted from a blank canvas in the shape of a tipi, gifted by her stepfather. Through Ledger Art, Carolyn brought to life three powerful themes: The Battle of Little Bighorn (1876), The Buffalo Calf Woman Brings the Sacred Pipe, and The Massacre at Wounded Knee (1890). This cultural art project is both a continuation of her lifelong mission to honor and share her Native heritage and a deeply personal journey of healing and spiritual return “home,” as she weaves together her own stories of family, culture, and the akahpe (lodge).
