Topics in Addiction: Developing and Implementing a Pediatric Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Program: From Concept to Clinical Integration

Presented by Stephen Sandelich, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Penn State Health MS Hershey Medical Center.
This presentation will outline the process of developing, implementing, and sustaining a pediatric medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) program within a both academic and community settings. The talk will cover key steps in program design, including stakeholder engagement, regulatory and logistical considerations, integration with existing emergency and outpatient services. Special attention will be given to addressing barriers unique to adolescent and young adult populations, including confidentiality, consent, and linkage to follow-up care.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the essential components of a pediatric MOUD program and the rationale for early intervention in youth with opioid use disorder.
- Identify institutional, regulatory, and logistical barriers to implementing MOUD in pediatric settings.
- Discuss strategies for integrating MOUD initiation and follow-up care across emergency, inpatient, and outpatient environments.
