Topics in Addiction Seminar: Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder and Harm Reduction Services in Rural Pennsylvania

May 12, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

This month’s Topics in Addiction Seminar will be presented by Kristina Brant, PhD, Assistant Professor of Rural Sociology in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Society & Education and the Assistant Director of Development for the Population Research Institute at the Pennsylvania State University.

Increased access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUDs) and harm reduction services are widely recognized by researchers and practitioners as evidence-based interventions driving the current decrease in overdose deaths. In this talk, Dr. Brant will discuss her recent study that examined access to MOUD and harm reduction services in rural Pennsylvania. Drawing on survey and interview data, Dr. Brant will discuss differences in availability of MOUDs and harm reduction services between urban and rural counties, along with continued barriers to accessibility of these services in rural counties.

Topics in Addiction is the monthly gathering of the Penn State Addiction Center for Translation. Topics are presented in accessible ways to try to be inclusive of all, regardless of training or background. The program hopes to reach not only scientists, clinicians, and trainees at Penn State, but also everyone in the community with interests in addiction and its widespread implications on research, clinical work, medical education, policy, and the community.
