The war in Ukraine continues to impact health and healthcare in ways previously unimaginable. Healthcare workers and patients – civilian and military – face new ethical dilemmas as well as threats to safety and security amidst limited resources. Bioethics can play a central role in addressing such challenges, yet the field has been somewhat underdeveloped in Ukraine. The speakers, Olesya (Ole) Vynnyk, MD, MA, a Ukrainian bioethicist about to complete her doctoral degree at Loyola University Chicago, and a Loyola bioethics faculty member, Emily E. Anderson, PhD, MPH, directing an NIH-funded bioethics training program for Ukrainian physicians and scientists, will review data on the impact of the war in Ukraine on public health and the healthcare system and present key ethical challenges facing patients and healthcare workers. The speakers will also share their perspectives on efforts to develop bioethics in Ukraine.
