Fellowship equips investigators to engage the community in research

The Community-Engaged Research Core Faculty Fellowship Program, offered by Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute, is a yearlong opportunity that matches a researcher with a mentor. Gina Brelsford, PhD, is using the program to improve her study the role of religion and spirituality in coping by parents of children in the NICU.

An extensive online guidebook has been created to help early-career to established Penn State researchers more easily navigate the clinical research process at Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Research to uncover factors behind bladder cancer progression receives ACS grant

The American Cancer Society has awarded a grant to study bladder cancer development to David DeGraff, assistant professor of pathology, surgery and biochemistry and molecular biology, and a member of Penn State Cancer Institute.

In the new AdvantageRib system, the fixation plate is attached to the inner surface of the rib using fiber optics, very small incisions, and a procedure Dr. Randy Haluck compares to building a ship in a bottle. The new method is much less invasive than existing ways of stabilizing or "fixing" broken ribs. The image shows a model of two sets of ribs, each one broken in half, with stabilizers connecting the broken halves of each rib together.
