Intro to Research Development – Part 1

Research Development, a business unit within the Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, is dedicated to growing the College of Medicine’s research portfolio by providing a range of tools and resources to help investigators expand their network, identify funding and secure extramural grant support.

Research Development’s activities fall into four broad categories — grant-seeking skills, proposal competitiveness, researcher engagement and funding opportunities. In this two part series, researchers will learn how Research Development can support them.

Grant-Seeking Skills

  • Funding Searches – Research Development provides one-on-one and small group trainings on how to use to Funding Institutional, a searchable database of funder profiles, 18,000+ active funding opportunities and 7+ million awarded grants. Faculty members may also request a targeted funding search to support a specific research project.
  • Workshops & Webinars – Throughout the year, Research Development hosts skill-building workshops and webinars to support researchers’ pursuit of extramural funding. Events are recorded and uploaded to Research Development’s Media Channel.

Proposal Competitiveness

  • Proposal Library – Research Development maintains a collection of winning NIH (and equivalent) proposals that were submitted by faculty members and trainees at the College of Medicine. This access-restricted collection provides grant-seekers insight on proposal format and style. Summary statements are often included to provide insight on the peer review process.
  • Boilerplate Language – Grant proposals often require a description of the environment where the research will be performed. Research Development has compiled boilerplate language that investigators can use, in whole or in part, for grant proposals or other reports.
  • Proposal Support – Research Development partners with consulting firm Hanover Research to provide proposal support to faculty members and trainees at the College of Medicine. Hanover’s services focus on external grant submissions and are advance-scheduled. This service comes at no cost to the principal investigator or the home department.
