A collaborative vision: New mosaic glass art piece installed in Penn State Cancer Institute Infusion Therapy
At the heart of the Penn State Cancer Institute, a new glass mosaic encompasses the flow of emotions for patients and caregivers as they give and receive treatment, thanks to the collaborative efforts of professional glass artist Aya Kinoshita and the dedicated Infusion Therapy team.
Titled “Goose on a Flow,” the art was installed at the end of August in the Infusion Therapy 2nd floor waiting area. “This creation demonstrates the unique power of art to inspire and unite,” said Claire de Boer, director of Center Stage Arts in Health.
Kinoshita led workshops during which the Infusion Therapy staff created fused glass pieces for the goose feathers and colorful background. At the unveiling, team members could pick out their contributions within the finished piece.
The goose, a symbol of migration and renewal, represents the journey on which patients embark during their treatment. The flowing colors signify life’s constant movement, while the mosaic itself embodies the diverse pieces that come together.
“My hope is that this mural will bring comfort, encouragement, or even just a chance to escape into an imaginary journey of ever-changing landscape or wind direction to the patients, their families and friends, and all the medical professional and staff members who support them,” Kinoshita said.
