Anderson named chief quality officer, vice president at Hershey Medical Center

Dr. Taffy Anderson has been named chief quality officer and vice president at Hershey Medical Center. Anderson has served in this role in an interim capacity since July 2020.

Anderson will continue to lead the development of a comprehensive quality strategy for the Hershey Medical Center. She will oversee the institutionwide alignment of quality measurement processes and performance improvement and partner with the departments of Patient Safety, Quality Systems Improvement and Patient Experience to advance the core mission of providing patient-centered, high-value care. Anderson also will continue to serve as a resource to the Hershey Medical Center Board of Directors.

Anderson has used her problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to make improvements to the Medical Center’s quality efforts and reduce safety events. She has worked closely with the Patient Safety Department, Mortality Improvement and Patient Safety Indicator Committee leaders to improve patient outcomes through a team approach to understanding data and clinical practices.

Anderson’s vision is to position the Medical Center as the quality and patient safety leader among academic medical centers nationwide. A cornerstone of this work is her integrated approach to interfacing with a wide range of Medical Center stakeholders to highlight their contributions to and impact on quality outcomes for patients. She has mentored and facilitated critical conversations with providers to review quality metrics, benchmarking and the importance of improved documentation.

Through Anderson’s efforts, the Medical Center has made significant improvements in its Vizient Quality and Accountability rankings, from 38th in fiscal year 2020 to 15th in the third quarter of fiscal year 2021. Vizient is the largest member-driven health care performance comparative improvement company in the country.

To further support this quality work, Anderson recently created an Executive Benchmarking Committee to address each Vizient quality domain and identify specific improvement initiatives. Her goal is to see the Medical Center reach the top quartile in quality and patient safety, aligning with the five-year strategic focus to maximize value of care to patients.
