Annual Penn State Health Night at Bears game shows support to hockey-loving community

Employees volunteered for Penn State Health Night at the Bears on March 2 at the Giant Center.

The annual event is a tradition for the health system and a chance for staff members to show their commitment to the community. More than 80 volunteers from 20 departments provided local residents with information about Penn State Health services at the minor league hockey game. The Hershey Bears played the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Volunteers gave the nearly 10,000 attendees Penn State Health and Hershey Bears branded T-shirts. Juju R., a 5-year-old pediatric heart patient from Lebanon who was treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, dropped the puck to open the game and told fans about his care on the big screen.

Volunteers explained transplant options available to local residents through Penn State Health, including living donor liver and kidney transplants. The stroke team allowed fans to hold a real human brain. Volunteers from Life Lion gave children a chance to land a helicopter in a busy area during a creative game at their booth.

At the health system booth, local hockey fans were invited to show where they live on a map of the region. Many discovered a new Penn State Health option moving in nearby – the Hampden Medical Center, the network’s newest acute care hospital, which is slated to open in 2021.
