Be safe at crosswalks

Across the campus at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, facilities, safety and security teams are reporting a spike in pedestrian complaints about crosswalk safety.
“We all need to look out for the safety of everyone visiting or working on campus,” said Marvin Smith, assistant vice president of Facilities. Crosswalk safety, Smith said, is the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians.
Employees, students and visitors are urged to keep the following tips in mind:
Pedestrians:
- Cross with care. Always make eye contact with drivers and wait until traffic has stopped before crossing.
- Pay attention. Avoid distractions and do not text or use a cellphone while crossing.
- Continue to look for traffic while crossing as drivers may not always stop or obey traffic signals.
- Get noticed. Wear bright clothing, especially in low light or poor weather.
- Be predictable. Always use crosswalks. Do not jaywalk.
- Extend an arm to indicate the wish to cross.
- Walk on the left side of the road facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.
- Follow traffic signals.
Drivers:
- Always yield to pedestrians at intersections.
- Be alert and scan left and right for pedestrians when approaching any intersection.
- Vehicles that stop ahead or in the lane next to your vehicle may be yielding to pedestrians. Be prepared to stop.
- Always watch for pedestrians when backing up.
- Be aware of pedestrians who seem unsure or who may not be paying attention.
- Be alert for crosswalk markings and pedestrian crossing signs.
