Berini shares recap of FY20 Operating Plan achievements

Hershey Medical Center President Deborah Berini provides a recap of the significant progress the organization made to achieve the goals in the fiscal year 2020 Operating Plan in the latest edition of the President’s Perspective.

Dear Colleagues:

During the annual public Board of Directors meeting, I shared many stories about how our team at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center stepped up to serve our community, our patients and each other during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was equally proud to report that in the midst of these challenging times, we had made outstanding progress in achieving the goals outlined in the FY20 Operating Plan.

Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine leaders developed the FY20 Operating Plan to align and focus our collective work to:

  • Improve quality and patient experience
  • Value our people and make the medical center not just a great place to receive care but a great place to give care
  • Increase access to our services
  • Be good stewards of our financial resources

With few exceptions, our employees, faculty and leadership succeeded in meeting the goals that ranged from implementing our patient experience playbook and significantly reducing serious safety events, to making strides to optimize the Cerner electronic medical record and improving care documentation. We also enhanced research support and brought more discoveries to market.

A recap of the FY20 Operating Plan highlights our progress and success. In many cases, we not only met the goal but exceeded it. It is no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic did have an impact in slowing progress on a few of our efforts. In large part those impacts are directly related to critical safety practices that included closing clinics and canceling or postponing elective surgeries. Our recovery efforts are well underway and we continue to see increases in volumes as we highlight our enhanced safety practices and encourage patients to access the critical services they need.

I know that it took every bit of stamina, bravery and grit to provide the outstanding care and support to

our patients and community this year more so than ever. At the same time, we stayed focused on the objectives in the FY20 Operating Plan pillars. The progress we made is foundational to our fiscal year 2021 initiatives and the current work to develop our Hershey Medical Center strategic plan.

Please take a minute to review the recap of the FY20 Operating Plan and look at the progress we have made – together. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life through improved health, the professional preparation of those who will serve the health needs of others and the discovery of knowledge that will benefit all.  We truly are better together.
