Binge-eating disorder clinic for teens

Does your teen eat large amounts of food, often hiding their eating from you or other family members?

This may be a sign of binge-eating disorder — a serious condition that can contribute to major health issues and lower self-esteem, which can in turn lead to more binge-eating.

Binge-eating disorder is the most common eating disorder and is treatable with the right program of behavior modification and emotional support. Penn State Health offers the only program in central Pennsylvania to treat binge-eating disorder at an early age, offering better lifetime outcomes.

How we evaluate and treat

At the Penn State Health Binge-Eating Disorder Clinic, your child will be given a nutrition assessment, followed by a 15-week program that teaches them how to resume a healthy relationship with food.

  • Open to teens 12 to 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with binge-eating disorder
  • Patients will be screened by a psychologist to determine a binge-eating disorder diagnosis
  • Initial medical evaluation and/or psychiatric evaluation will be given if indicated
  • Multidisciplinary approach includes medical, psychiatric, psychological counseling and nutritional counseling services
  • Sixteen individual sessions of psychological counseling sessions with eight concurrent individual nutritional counseling sessions
  • Outcomes based on assessment parameters, including questionnaires, anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests
