Black History Month inspires cuisine and more at Penn State Health

Penn State Health is celebrating Black History Month with culturally inspired meal options at all health system medical centers. The Multicultural Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) and Sodexo will offer Black History Month-inspired meals:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20
    • Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Rotunda Café
    • All medical center cafeterias

The inspired cuisine is a nod to this year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and the Arts.” The theme explores the influence African Americans have had on the visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, food and other forms of cultural expression.

Lunch and learn

The Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Multicultural BERG will host a virtual lunch and learn exploring the links between racism and mental health. This event is part of Penn State Health’s commitment to fostering meaningful conversations and driving positive change in our community:

  • “The Impacts of Structural Racism on Mental Health”
  • Thursday, Feb. 22
  • Noon–1 p.m.
  • Register

Local experts will participate in a panel discussion on mental health and diversity, equity and inclusion. The panelists will delve into the complex relationship between structural racism and mental health, exploring topics such as the historical roots of racial inequality, its psychological impacts and strategies for resilience and healing. Participants can take part in a safe and constructive conversation about challenging societal issues and learn about tools to improve how we live and serve in a diverse world.

Employees who register by Friday, Feb. 16, will receive a voucher to use in any Penn State Health medical center cafeteria.

Trailblazer nominations

As a reminder, the Multicultural BERG is accepting nominations for Black trailblazers at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine to highlight during Black History Month in February. Employees selected as trailblazers will be featured in upcoming stories on the Infonet and in The RITE Stuff.

Contact Jude McCrea in the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to nominate a trailblazer or to learn about membership in the Multicultural BERG or other employee resource groups at Penn State Health.
