Book Club: Connecting through Literature

Please join the Department of Humanities and the Harrell Health Sciences Library at Penn State College of Medicine every month in the upcoming year to discuss selected books by contemporary writers of color in the U.S. We will meet monthly from September through May. The goal of this monthly discussion is to strengthen our community ties and expand our understanding of each other through reading. Meetings are held over Zoom and registration is required to receive the link to attend. For registered attendees, meeting information will be sent by email the day before the event.

The dates and list of reading selections are as follows:

Oct. 13, 2021: Mexican Gothic – Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Nov. 10: The Night Watchman – Louise Erdrich
Dec. 15, 2021: Call Us What We Carry, Amanda Gorman (from whichever book or online source you’d like)
Jan. 12, 2022: Transcendent Kingdom – Yaa Gyasi
Feb. 9, 2022: Just Us: An American Conversation – Claudia Rankine
March 9, 2022: The Woman Warrior – Maxine Hong Kingston
April 13, 2022: Born a Crime – Trevor Noah
May 11, 2022: The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories – Ken Liu

These events are free and open to all Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health faculty, staff, students, trainees and community members. Continuing Education credits are available for the Penn State Health and College of Medicine community.
