Clinical Simulation Center at Penn State College of Medicine earns ACS accreditation
The Clinical Simulation Center at Penn State College of Medicine has earned a five-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Accredited Education Institutes Program. The award recognizes excellence in training for both staff and learners, advancing medical innovation and enhancing patient care. The state-of-the-art center offers realistic education and training in patient care and emergency medicine.
“This accreditation is a testament to the dedication, expertise and collaboration of our entire team,” said Dr. Nicolas Ellis, interim director of the Simulation Center. “It places us among an elite group of institutions driving the future of surgical education and advancing medical practice.”
Jointly operated by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the College of Medicine, the Simulation Center includes the Simulation Laboratory, the Resuscitation Sciences Training Center and the Standardized Patient Program. It offers training opportunities for practicing physicians, resident physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics and other health care professionals, as well as students in medicine, nursing and physician assistant programs.
Accreditation of simulation centers is comparable to a hospital’s Joint Commission survey. It requires meeting ACS standards, submitting documentation and a video site visit by an ACS team to ensure the center is following those standards.
The ACS is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that works to raise the standards of surgical practice and improve the quality of care for surgical patients.
