Emergency Department expansion prompts access, parking changes starting Feb. 15

Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center will temporarily restrict access to its Emergency Department main entrance beginning 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, as the hospital continues its expansion project.

Patients or their family members who are dropping off a patient at the ED will be directed to a valet drop-off area, and their vehicle will be parked by an attendant at no charge. All others will be directed to park elsewhere on the Hershey campus.

This change is critical to protect safety and clinical operations because the patient drop-off area and ambulance parking will share the same space for about six to eight weeks.

Penn State Health employees and others should use the main hospital or north entrances to access the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center instead of the ED entrance.

The $49 million ED expansion project will add 28,000 square feet of space, renovate 7,000 square feet of space and support a phased realignment of the entire department. The improvements will expedite the start of the care process, improve patient and provider flow and enhance departmental efficiency. The second-floor expansion area will include three new operating rooms. The ED expansion project is slated for completion by the end of 2019.
