Enhanced security part of July 1 Penn State Health OnDemand upgrade

A new software upgrade for the Penn State Health OnDemand app will give patients an extra layer of security during virtual visits and while accessing their personal health information. The upgrade by Amwell, the telemedicine company that supports the app, will go live on July 1.

The software upgrade will include two-factor authentication that ensures only authorized patients can log into the app.

“It’s similar to the security features you find when logging into online banking apps,” said Amit Chahwala, supervisor of virtual care operations at Penn State Health.

Here’s how it will work:

  • A prompt will ask patients to opt into two-factor authentication when they log into the app.
  • Patients who opt in will receive a one-time, six-digit verification code via text message.
  • Patients will enter that code into the app to begin a virtual visit or gain access to their medical records

Two-factor authentication will be voluntary. “But providers and schedulers should encourage patients to opt in for maximum security,” Chahwala said.

Other new features in the July 1 upgrade will:

  • Allow schedulers to book virtual visits up to one year in advance
  • Fix current scheduling issues with dermatology patients
