Four Diamonds Research Grants

The Four Diamonds mission is to conquer childhood cancer by assisting children and their families through superior care, comprehensive support and innovative research. Since its creation in 1972, Four Diamonds has helped more than 4,800 children and families and supported a diverse platform of childhood cancer research at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.

Applications may be in any area of pediatric cancer research that contributes to the diagnosis, treatment or cure of pediatric cancer. Proposals should be aligned with the main goal of the research mission of Four Diamonds: to support innovative research leading to enhanced cure rates and therapies in childhood cancer to improve the quality of life for these children in need of medical care.

Program Summary

Faculty Research Grants Expand answer
  • Faculty applications may be submitted for clinical research, laboratory-based research, or quality projects and may request up to $50,000 direct costs (indirect costs are not allowed) for a period of up to 12 months.
  • The Principal Investigator (PI) must be a Penn State faculty member at the rank of researcher, research associate, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. The PI cannot be a Four Diamonds Endowed Investigator.
  • An investigator may only serve as PI on one application. However, the number of projects where an investigator serves as a collaborator is not limited.
  • Funded investigators may be required to present their findings approximately 12 months after initial funding to a Pediatric Oncology Academic Conference. A final progress report will be required.
Trainee Research Grants Expand answer
  • Four Diamonds Trainee Research Grants will fund budgets up to $50,000 for a period of 12-months.
  • The principal investigator (PI) must be a postdoctoral trainee at Penn State. This includes residents and fellows of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
  • PIs may not currently hold an NIH grant as PI.
  • An investigator may only serve as PI on one application. However, the number of projects where an investigator serves as a collaborator is not limited.
  • Funded investigators may be required to present their findings approximately 12 months after initial funding to a Pediatric Oncology Academic Conference. A final progress report will also be required.
Review and Award Process Expand answer

Applications will undergo scientific merit review completed by non-conflicted Penn State faculty members with appropriate expertise and scored on the following criteria: responsiveness to the RFP, significance, investigator(s), innovation, approach, environment, potential for future support of the project, compliance and overall impact.

Following the scientific merit review, recommendations for funding will be made by the Four Diamonds Allocations Committee, the chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and the vice dean for research and graduate studies of Penn State College of Medicine. Final approval will be given by the dean of the College of Medicine.

Applicants will receive written feedback from the review process.
