Four tips for winter weather safety

The Facilities Department on the Hershey campus offers employees, faculty and students the following suggestions for staying safe in wintry conditions:

  1. Dress for the weather. Footwear should provide adequate traction for walking in snow and ice conditions. While the Facilities team strives to keep walkways and parking lots clear of snow and ice, it is sometimes difficult to keep ahead of the snow.
  2. Use caution around snow removal equipment, such as plows on roadways.
  3. Park in areas that have been cleared of snow. Crews typically try to clear the back sections of parking lots for incoming shifts, since those sections are often less crowded. Plowing lots with vehicles in them can be very challenging and more time consuming. Plowing often leaves heaped rows of snow that make it difficult for vehicles to get out of their parking spots.
  4. If crews have missed an area or if employees encounter a problem, dial 717-531-8010.
