Postdoctoral scholar Golla presents webinars at international virtual meetings

Dr. Upendar Rao Golla, a postdoctoral scholar at Penn State College of Medicine, was one of 14 invited lecturers at the International Webinar Series hosted by the University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Palamuru University in association with the Indian Pharmaceutical Association.

Panelists presented the talks on a wide array of scientific and research topics from July 8 to 14.

Dr. Golla’s talk was titled “Engineering of 3D Genome: An Update on Emerging Technologies and their Pharmacological Implications.”

During his lecture, Golla discussed current genome engineering technologies and their implication for therapeutic purposes in the clinic. A replay of the lecture is available here.

Based on recent findings, researchers hypothesize that editing portions of the genome may be a useful technique for controlling disease conditions that are developed due to abnormal folding of chromosomes in the nucleus.

Dr. Golla also presented an additional lecture titled “Drug Development, Repurposing and Current Advancements in the Treatment of COVID-19” at the International Webinar on Biomedical Product Development: Challenges and Future Opportunities hosted by the Government Degree College in Pithapuram, AP, India on Sept. 4.

He discussed various aspects of the conventional drug development process with a special emphasis on drug repurposing to combat the current COVID-19 pandemic. Drug repurposing involves identifying new uses for existing drugs and is an approach being used during the pandemic.

Dr. Golla works under Dr. Suming Huang, professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at the College of Medicine.

His research is focused on the differential regulation of chromatin architecture in hematopoiesis and leukemia. He hopes to identify critical regulators of oncogenes important in leukemogenesis.
