Heron recognized by Hershey Medical Center as Physician of the Month for January

Hershey Medical Center presented its Physician of the Month for January to Dr. Christopher “Kit” Heron, associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in State College.

Heron’s nominators say he is passionate about employee wellness. Since 2017, he has managed the development and implementation of curriculum and activities that reduce burnout in residency education. He also helps to promote education and understanding about electronic health records. As a member of the Penn State Health Ambulatory Care Steering Committee, he created and implemented Cerner Millennium training and unification across Penn State Health ambulatory sites.

Heron’s achievements include:

  • Serving as a trusted educator, advisor and mentor for family medicine residents
  • Partnering with colleagues to create FCM Tech Tricks, a group that works with information technology experts and educators to enhance employee health record skills and adoption among providers
  • Focusing on telemedicine initiatives in remote health care delivery, particularly primary care
  • Supporting Penn State Health in the Department of Family Medicine’s workflow redesign of documentation, billing, orders and chart reviews for more than 150 providers across Pennsylvania

In 2022, Heron received the Penn State College of Medicine Faculty of the Year award and Penn State Health Family and Community Medicine Residency at Mount Nittany Medical Center Faculty of the Year award. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Family Practice, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice and American Medical Informatics Association.
