Hershey Medical Center clinicians Rex, Zurca recognized by Patient Safety Authority

Nursing Professional Development Leader Jenny Rex and Pediatrics Critical Care Physician Dr. Adrian Zurca, both of Hershey Medical Center, have been honored as winners of the 2023 I AM Patient Safety award in the Individual Impact category.

The contest, hosted by the Patient Safety Authority, recognizes advancements, outcomes and commitment to patient safety across Pennsylvania and the nation. Rex and Zurca were selected from more than 125 nominations.

Rex and Zurca collaborated to create a custom backboard that allows clinical staff to safely and effectively perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation for patients with severe spinal hyperextension. They also provided clinician colleagues with hands-on training in its use.

The awards are judged by a cross section of national and regional health care executives, patient safety advocates and government, university and patient representatives. The Patient Safety Authority is an independent state agency that collects and analyzes patient safety data to improve safety outcomes and help prevent patient harm.
