Hershey Medical Center committed to campus safety

The large number of people walking and driving on the campus of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center means every one of us has a responsibility to remember safe driving and safe crossing practices.

Speeding, distracted driving and distracted walking ― crossing the street while looking at a cell phone or listening to music ― have been to blame for a spike in pedestrian complaints about crosswalk safety. Safety has been a particular concern at the crosswalk between Centerview Parking Garage and University Physician Center.

The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center considers the safety of employees, patients and visitors a priority. Our facilities, safety and security teams continually monitor the campus to minimize everyday hazards. They also look for potential hazards created by improvements, such as the campus construction projects going on right now.

When the sidewalk on the west side of Campus Drive was identified as a safety risk due to the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital expansion project, leadership agreed to close it and detour pedestrian traffic to an intersection that we enhanced for safer pedestrian crossing. As part of our ongoing efforts to help patients, visitors and employees get to and from their parking areas safely, we increased the campus shuttle service and added an on-demand shuttle in May.

While these examples are just a few of the more recent improvements, they represent our commitment to improve safety and enhance the patient and employee experience.

Safety Reminders

All employees are reminded:

  1. When driving, obey all traffic signs, signals and posted speed limits on campus.
  2. When walking, stay in the crosswalk, wait for signals or signs and don’t assume that a driver sees you.
  3. When cycling, follow traffic laws and wear a helmet.
