Hershey Medical Center makes several changes to COVID-19 Patient Placement and Surge Plan

To ensure additional bed capacity, Hershey Medical Center leaders have modified the COVID-19 Patient Placement and Surge Plan.
The new plan adjusts the order in which units across the hospital should be used to meet care needs during the pandemic. The modifications also impact adult capacity for each surge level.
Changes include:
- Surge Level Green – New adult capacity is 0-27
- Surge Level Yellow – Use 3 South Addition West first for patients; new adult capacity is 28-39
- Surge Level Orange – Use 3 Main Building West first and then Pediatric Emergency Department Special Pathogens Unit; new adult capacity is 40-51
- Surge Level Red – Open 3 South Addition East to add 12 beds; new adult capacity is 52-63
- Surge Level Maroon – Use Surgical Intermediate Care Unit Station 2; new adult capacity is 64-74
- Surge Level Purple – 20 beds in the Medical Intermediate Care Unit; new adult capacity is 75-94
- Surge Level Navy – 13 floor beds in 3 Main Building East; new adult capacity is 95-107
- Surge Level Gray – Eight beds in the Surgical Intermediate Care Unit Station 1; new adult capacity is 108-115
- Surge Level Dark Gray – Eight beds in 3 Main Building West, six beds in South Addition East for total of 18 beds using quad and double rooms – Use 3 South Addition West for 16 beds using quad and double rooms; new adult capacity is 116-133
- Surge Level Charcoal – 16 beds in the Medical Intensive Care Unit; new adult patient capacity is 134-149
In addition, new guidance addresses when staff should place complex floor patients ― higher acuity patients with challenging medical conditions who are on a regular adult hospital floor ― on the 6th Floor rather than in the intermediate care unit.
Medical Center managers and clinical staff should review the revised COVID-19 Patient Placement and Surge Plan carefully to ensure smooth and efficient patient placements.
