Hershey Medical Center presents awards for patient safety, reliability

Hershey Medical Center’s Patient Safety Team honored the 2023 Patient Safety and Reliability Award winners during National Patient Safety Awareness week March 13-17.
Winners:
- James Fenush, vice president of nursing ― Leader of the Year Award
- Dr. Melissa Boltz, trauma surgery physician ― Physician Award
- Joseph Connors, supervisor supply and logistics ― Non-clinical Award
- Tyler Carpenter, assistant nurse manager, Perianesthesia ― Patient Safety Champion Award
- Adrianne Miller, registered nurse clinical supervisor, Penn State Health Cocoa Outpatient Center ― Clinical Outpatient Award
- Emily Scicchitano, respiratory care practitioner ― Clinical Inpatient Award
- Sue Pazuchanics ― Safety Influencer Award
Team Patient Safety Award winners:
- Diagnostic Radiology Team ― Great Catch Award
- Medical Intensive Care Unit ― Team Award
Additionally, staff that engaged with the Patient Safety team in games and quizzes about the SAFE bundle and reporting of safety events during National Patient Safety Awareness Week were able to enter to win several gift cards. The recipients of those gift cards include:
- Jenny Zimmerman, vice president of nursing
- Beky Parr, clinical staff leader, Heart and Vascular Critical Care Unit
- Donald Dissinger, nurse practitioner, Psychiatric Consult Services
- Brandi Whisman, Phlebotomy
- Kelly Myers, clinical staff leader, Operating Room
Award winners exemplify the principles of the Medical Center’s SAFE (Support the team, Ask questions, Focus on task, Effective Communication) and TEAM (Talk Safety, Expect Ownership and Accountability, Act on Opportunities, Monitor) bundles which help health care workers ensure patient safety.
The awards are part of Hershey Medical Center “It Takes a Team to Reach Zero” initiative. Launched in 2017, the effort focuses on creating zero incidents of preventable harm. The Medical Center’s quality and safety teams created evidence-based leadership methods and error prevention tools and introduced them to the entire Medical Center workforce and to the outpatient practices affiliated with it.
